Abstract

Two hundred twenty-seven volunteer women who were hospitalized due to delivery participated in the study. Blood samples were analyzed with "Enzyme linked immünoabsorbent assay (ELIZA)" method in order to measure tetanus antibody levels. Women were also applied a questionnaire to investigate factors associated with antibody levels. Tetanus seroprevalence was found to be 21.6 %. All of the vaccinated women have had an antenatal care at least once. Sixty-five percent of women have had a protective level of antibody, while 35.2% of them have not. Factors associated with being vaccinated during the last pregnancy were: place of the antenatal care and the type of health personnel. Factors associated with antibody levels were: age of woman, educational level, and the number of doses. According to the results of this study, more than one third of women have not got a required level of antibody to protect themselves and their children against tetanus disease. Results of the study indicate missed opportunities regarding tetanus immunization among pregnant women.
