Abstract

Objective: To assess the number of cases with adolescent pregnancies attending to the University Hospital and State Maternity Hospital (SMH) and the differences in birth characteristics between two hospitals in Eskişehir city, based on available registered data. Institutions: Osmangazi University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Eskişehir State Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital. Material and Methods : A retrospective comparison study was conducted through six years' records in the university and year 2000 of the state maternity hospital records. Informations were retrieved from patients files and compared between two hospitals, in terms of gestational ages at birth, type of deliveries and birthveight of babies. Chi-square test with Yates' correction and Fisher 's exact chi-sauare test were used for the statistical analysis. Result: A total number of woman delivered at the university hospital in 6 year period was 3083 and number adolescent pregnancies was 87 (2.3%). in the state maternity hospital, 147 adolescent pregnancies were obtained in year 2000. Following the statistical analyis of available data , high percentage of adolescent deliveries between 20-28 weeks' gestation was observed in the university hospital (6.9% vs 0.9%, p<0.05). in regard to deliveries between 29-37 vıeeks of gestation, proportion was higher in the university hospital (36.8% vs 14.2%, p<0.01). in SMH, higher precentage was observed in deliveries between 38 and 42 weeks of gestation ( 83.2% vs 53.2%, p<0.01). in postterm pregnancies, no marked differences were found between university hospital and SMH (1.1% vs 1.8%, p>0.05). The university hospital had high percentages of birth weights of<2000 gr (24.4% vs 4.2%, p<0.01), and between birthweight 2001-2499 gr (17.9% vs 7.6%, p<0.01). No signifıcant differences in the type of deliveries were detected behveen tvo institııtions. Conclusion: Adolescent pregnancies who consulted and delivered at the university hospital were higher with a lower gestation at birth and lower birthweight. Reasons attributable for this result may be the fact (that university hospital is an important reference center in the city for high-risk pregnancies and the absence of adequeate neonatal intensive çare unit in the state maternity hospital where high patient turnover exists.
