Abstract

SUMMARY Child criminality is one of the major social problems. Here, it was aimed to investigate the records of the children who were taken to the Child Branch of Afyonkarahisar Police Department in the years from 2002 to 2004 regarding sociodemographic features, reasons for being taken to the Police Department and their consequences. The records for children were evaluated with SPPS version 9.0 program after the required permissions were obtained. A total of 838 children were observed to be taken to the Police Department of Afyonkarahisar in the years 2003, 2004 and 2005. After repeated records were eliminated, the total number of children was counted as 728. Of those, the numbers of children taken in respect to years were observed to be decreased in 3 consecutive years (p<0.001). Mean age of the children was 15.1±2.6years and 73.1 % of them were male. The majority of the children (89.8%) were from city center of Afyonkarahisar and living with their family (91.1%). Approximately, the half of them (53.1%) was students and 1.2 % was physically/mentally disabled. Substance abuse was seen in 30.9% of them and majority of them was also smoker (83.6%). The rate of accusation for an offense was 51% and the rate of children being a victim was 25.4%. The rate of life-threatening offense accusation was 44.4% and committing an offense alone was 30.2%. The percentage of the children who were prosecuted to the courts by the Child Department of Police was 84.7%.

Çocukların %73.1'i erkek, yaş ortalaması 15.1±2.6, %89.8'i il merkezinde ikamet etmekte, büyük çoğunluğu (%91.1) ailesinin yanında kalmakta, yaklaşık yansının (%53.1) öğrenciye %1.2'sinin fiziksel/zihinsel engelli olduğu, %30.9'unun bağımlılık yapıcı madde (%83.6'sı sigara) kullandığı saptandı.
