Abstract

Diagnosis of caries lesions at an early stage allows establishment of a treatment plan suitable for preservation of the dental hard tissues as much as possible. The inconsistencies among caries detection systems caused some difficulties in enrolment and comparison of the findings determined in epidemiological and clinical trials. Recently, to overcome this problem, the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) was developed to use in dental education, clinical research and clinical practice. ICDAS is a clinical dental caries scoring system which allows detection and assessment of caries lesions at an early stage. As a result of conferences, the criteria of ICDAS were modified and ICDAS II was created. The International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS) has been developed in order to ensure that the caries can be treated correctly and the patient's caries risk group is identified and oral hygiene can be managed. This system was created based on ICDAS II. Nowadays, these systems are being used widely. These systems are thought to be the key to minimal invasive dentistry.
