Abstract

In this study, the symptoms and signs of 22 tuberculous meningitis cases (12 male, 10 female) ages between 19-53 years old, who were hospitalized in our clinic between January 1995 to January 2001, were retrospectively evaluated. The most frequently observed symptoms and/or clinical signs of the patients were; headache (100%), fever (95.4%), disorientation (86.3%), unconsciousness and nausea/vomiting (86.3%), neck stiffness (81.8%) and meningeal irritation findings (77.2%). The sedimentation rates of all cases (100%) were found elevated, in 8 (36.3%) cases leukocytosis and in 21 (95.4%) decreased glucose and chloride levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were detected as the laboratory findings. Acid-fast bacilli were seen in the CSF samples of 8 (36.3%) cases with Erlich-Ziehl-Neelsen method, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis were isolated from 7 of them on Löwenstein-Jensen medium. RNA amplifications were performed in CSF samples of 10 patients and 7 were found positive. In 8 (36.8%) of the patients, complications such as tuberculoma, hydrocephally and subdural abcess due to tuberculous meningitis were observed, whereas in 7 (31.8%) of the cases defects such as epilepsia, hemiparalysis and cerebral infarcts were developed. The mortality rate was 13.6% (3/22) among these tuberculous meningitis patients.
