Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Material and Method: Fourty-one patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDRP), and fourty-one patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDRP) which were followed up in our clinic and fourty-one healty people without diabetes mellitus (DM) were divided into three groups. All the patients CCT was measured with ultrasound pachymeter. The three groups' CCT were compared with each other. Results: There was no statistically difference about age and sex between the groups. Mean CCT was found as 539.12±30.8 µm in patients with NPDRP, 551.54±34.6 µm in patients with PDRP and 533.98±37.4 µm in healty control group. The difference between PDRP, NPDRP and control group was statistically significiant (p=0.016, p=0.002 respectively). There was no statistically significiant disitnction between NPDRP patients and control group (p=0.339). Conclusion: We observed that diabetic patients had an increased central corneal thickness when compared with non-diabetic patients. The presence of diabetic retinopathy affects these results. The ongoing proliferative retinopathy increases CCT.
