Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the visual acuity, astigmatic outcome, inflammatory changes and complications of cataracts that were operated by mini nucleus scleral tunnel technique. METHOD: A Blumenthal mode mini nucleus scleral tunnel procedure with an endocapsular implantation of intraocular lens had been applied to 156 cataractous eyes. RESULTS: On the postoperative 5th day; a mean of 1.7 D with the rule astigmatism was found in 41 eyes (26.3%), and a mean 1.4 D against the rule astigmatism had developed in 64 eyes (41%) while the remaining 51 eyes (32.7%) were astigmatism free. On the last control that had been performed at least 3 months after the operation; a mean 1.2 D with the rule astigmatism had been found in 32 eyes (20.5%), a mean 1.2 D against the rule astigmatism occured in 54 eyes (34.6%) and 70 eyes (44.9%) were astigmatism free. The measurement differences between the 5th day and last control in account to astigmatic values and axes were statistically insignificant (Wilcoxon Test P>0.05). Excluding the eyes that had very low visual acuity which was independent from the operation, for the remaining 124 eyes; an uncorrected visual acuity of 0.5 or more had developed in 84 eyes (67.7%) on the 5th postoperative day, in 111 eyes (92.5%) on the first month and in all eyes on the last control. Posterior capsule rupture had not occured in any of the cases. The anterior chamber inflammatory reaction that had occured in various degree in 57 eyes (36.5%) on the postoperative first day had completely disappeared on the 5th day. Hyphema was seen in 2 eyes (1.2%) after the operation and completely resolved on the 5th day. In the late postoperative period, posterior capsule opacification had been seen in only 5 eyes (3.2%). CONCLUSION: The reliable incision shape of this technique, the nonsignificant postoperative inflammation and complications, together with the very early visual rehabilitation because of the relatively low astigmatic outcome and the low expense of this procedure all make it ideal for our country and regions which have similar socioeconomical status.

Özet

AMAÇ: Mini nükleus-skleral tünel tekniğiyle katarakt ameliyatı yapılan olgularda astigmatizma, görme keskinlikleri, enflamasyonun seyri ve komplikasyonlar değerlendirilmiştir. YÖNTEM: Blumenthal'in "mini nükleus-skleral tünel" tekniğiyle katarakt ameliyatı yapılmış ve endokapsüler intraoküler lens konmuş 156 göz çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır.
