Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate effects on lacrimal function associated with systemic isotretinoin. Material and Method: Forty patients with severe acne were treated with systemic isotretinoin at a dose of 0.5-1mg/kg/day for 16 weeks. In all patients visual acuity, anterior segment examination, refraction and intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, Schirmer I test, tear film break-up time (BUT) were evaluated. All patients were asked for symptoms of dry eye like itching, burning, dryness. All these eye examinations were repeated before, during and after treatment with isotretinoin by the same examiner. Results: There was no difference in visual acuity and fundus examination in any of the cases after administration of the drug. No statistically significant difference was found between averages of IOP measurements and refraction. On the other hand, the differences between Schirmer I values and BUT measurements that were evaluated before and during treatment were statistically significant (p<0.05). Subjective symptoms such as dryness, itching and burning occurred in 15% of the patients. All abnormal findings disappeared one month after stopping therapy. Conclusion: There are ocular side effects of isotretinoin which are treatable and they dissapear after discontinuation of therapy.

Özet

Amaç: Sistemik izotretinoin tedavisinin göz yaşı fonksiyonlarına etkisini araştırmak. Gereç ve Yöntem: Akne vulgaris nedeniyle takip edilen 40 hastaya sistemik izotretinoin 16 hafta süreyle 0.5-1 mg/kg/gün dozunda uygulandı. Tüm hastalarda görme keskinliği, ön ve arka segment muayenesi, refraksiyon değerleri, göz içi basıncı ölçümü (GİB), Schirmer I testi, göz yaşı kırılma zamanı (GKZ) bakılarak kaydedildi.
