Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate epidemiology, etiology and admitted reasons of evisceration. Material and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed cases of 80 patients admitted to our clinic between March 2002 and May 2005. We evaluated cases according to their epidemiologic and etiologic factors and their application reasons. Results: A total of 80 eviscerated eyes of 80 patients (49 male and 31 female), were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 47±25 years (range 2 years to 103 years). The halves of the cases were over 60 years old. The most common application reason to our clinic was blind painful eye (92%, n=74). Phthisis of the bulb which was consequence of globe injury was the most common etiologic factor for evisceration (44%, n=35), followed by endophthalmitis (16%, n=13), glaucoma (15%, n=12), corneal ulcer and descemetocele (12%, n=12), others (10%, n=8). Conclusion: The most common application reason to our clinic was blind painful eye. Severe ocular injury and endophthalmitis are the major indications of the evisceration. The prevention of the trauma and the outstanding attention to obey the rules of sterilization during operation will be decreasing the indications of the evisceration.

Bulgular: Eviserasyon yapılan 80 olgunun 49’u (%61) erkek, 31’i (%39) kadın idi. Erkeklerin kadınlara oranı 1.5 olarak bulundu. Yaş ortalaması 47±25 yaş (2-103) idi. Olguların %50’si (40 olgu) 60 yaş üzerindeydi. Kliniğimize başvuru nedenleri, 74 olgu (%92) görmeyen gözlerdeki ağrı, 6 olgu da (%8) ise görmeyen gözlerdeki kozmetik problemler idi. Eviserasyona neden olan etyolojik faktörler, 35 olguda (%44) göz travmalarına bağlı gelişen fitizis bulbi, 13 olguda (%16) endoftalmi, 12 olguda (%15) absolü glokom, 12 olguda (%15) kornea absesi ve desmatosel, 8 olguda (%10) diğer nedenler olarak belirlendi. Sonuç: Eviserasyon yapılan olgularda kliniğe en sık başvuru nedeni görmeyen ağrılı gözdür. En sık eviserasyon endikasyonu travma ve endoftalmidir. Travmaların önlenmesine yönelik tedbirlerin alınması ve göz içi cerrahi sırasında sterilizasyon kurallarına azami dikkat gösterilmesi eviserasyon ihtiyacını azaltacaktır.
