Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of cyclosporin A 0,05% ophthalmic emulsion as supportive therapy to artificial tears preparations for dry eye patients during 6 months of treatment period. Materials and methods: This prospective study included 14 patients who, regarding objective and subjective criteria, were not completely treated using artificial tear preparations and who had the same signs and symptoms in both eyes, and who did not have predisposition of systemic diseases. Cyclosporin A 0,05% ophthalmic emulsion (Restasis, Allergan) was added to artificial tears treatment in one eye of each case to form a study group and in the other eye only artificial tear preparations was used to form a control group. During 6 months of study, patients were examined every two months. At each visit, objective and subjective criteria have been evaluated with guidance of a questionnaire. Objective criteria are visiual acuity, break-up-time, Schirmer tests (with or without local anesthesia), as well as corneal and conjunctival staining signs. Subjective criteria are photophoby, foreign body sensation, burningstinging, pain, dryness, and itchiness symptoms. Results: Mean age of patient group of 14 cases (thirteen women and one man) was 47,4 years within a range from 30 to 68 years. There were no statistically significant differences between eyes using cyclosporin A ophthalmic emulsion and eyes of control group regarding objective criteria (p>0,05). However, in the study group with topical cyclosporin treatment, statistically significant decreases were observed in the subjective criteria burning-stinging, pain, and foreign body sensation symptoms. Seven of fourteen patients made their choice as “good eye” in favour of topical cyclosporin used eyes, three of them chose their control eyes. Four patients implied no differences between their both eyes. Conclusions: Cyclosporin A ophthalmic emulsion had no remarkable effects on the artificial tears treatment. Diminution of subjective symptoms of cases on cyclosporin using eyes was associated with placebo effect.

Özet

Amaç: Siklosporin A %0,05 oftalmik emülsiyonunun kuru göz hastalarında yapay gözyaşı preparatlarına ek tedavi olarak kullanımında 6 aylık tedavi sürecindeki etkilerini araştırmak. Sonuçlar: Siklosporin A oftalmik emülsiyonunun kuru göz hastalığında yapay gözyaşı tedavisine belirgin katkı yapmadığı saptandı. Olguların subjektif şikayetlerinin ilacı kullanan gözde daha az olmasının plasebo etkisinden kaynaklandığı düşünüldü.
