Abstract

Aim: To compare the effectivity of Snellen E chart and LEA symbols for measuring visual acuity in preschool children. Material and Method: One hundred and four eyes of 52 patients (26 M, 26 F) who were treated and examined at Beyoğlu Eye Training and Research Hospital in the year 2008, were included in this study. Visual acuity measurements were done by using Snellen E chart and LEA symbols. For statistical analysis, SPSS 14.0 software was used. Results: The ages of all the patients included in this study were ranging between 4 and 5 years (mean age: 4.62 years, SD:0.49). Ambliyopia ratio was 85% (44 patients). Mean autorefractometry measures of the patients with cycloplegia was +4.56 (SD:2.84) spherically and -1.25 (SD:1.19) cylindrically. Mean visual acuity value in decimals was 0.62 ± 0.24 (with logMAR 0,25 ± 0,20) when using Snellen E chart and 0.63 ± 0.25 (with logMAR 0,24 ± 0,20) when using LEA symbols. There was not a statistically important difference between these values (for decimals p=0.44, for logMAR p=0.10). Conclusion:Both Snellen E chart and LEA symbols are effective and reliable in measuring visual acuity in preschool children. There was not an important difference between these methods in the aspect of effectivity and reliability.
