Abstract

Aim: To compare the effects of spherical and aspherical soft lenses on visual quality by visual acuity, contrast sensitiviy (CS) testing and wavefront analysis. Material and Method: Forty-two eyes of 21 subjects with myopia or myopia with astigmatism less than 0,75 D were included. Following CS testing with spectacle correction, total higher order aberrations (HOA), coma, trefoil and spherical aberration were determined by wavefront analysis. Subjects were fitted with a spherical contact lens in one eye and an aspherical lens in the fellow eye according to spherical equivalent refractions. Wavefront analysis and CS testing were repeated to compare the changes induced by lenses. Results: Spherical equivalent refractions ranged between -1 and -5.25 D. Significant improvement in CS was detected only at 18 cycles/degree frequency with aspherical lenses. Total HOA did not change while spherical aberration decreased significantly with both types of lenses. The changes in the rest of the HOA were not significant. Conclusions: No significant difference was observed between spherical and aspherical lenses regarding visual acuity. Spherical aberration decreased significantly with both lens types. Significant improvement in CS was observed only at a single frequency with aspherical lenses.
