Abstract

Objective: To determine ocular pathologies in patients with Down syndrome. Material and Method: Medical records of 35 patients with Down's syndrome (aged between 1 and 13 years) who were referred to strabismus division between 2009 and 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. The ophthalmologic evaluation included a global inspection of orbit and bulbus oculi, biomicroscopic examination of the anterior segment, measurement of intraocular pressure with Goldmann applanation tonometer, dilated fundus examination, cycloplegic refraction and evaluation of ocular motility. Results: Phenotypic features (oblique palpebral fissures, upward slanting eyes, epicanthus and flat nasal bridge) were present in all cases (100%). We observed myopia in 11 (31.4%), hyperopia in 23 (65.7%), astigmatism in 26 (74.3%), esotropia in 20 (57.1%), exotropia in 4 (11.4%), vertical strabismus in 3 (8.5%), esotropia accompanied by vertical strabismus in 5 (14.3%), nystagmus in 5 (14.3%), cataract in 2 (5.7%), keratoconus in 1 (2.8%), glaucoma in 1 (2.8%), nasolacrimal duct obstruction in 4 (11.4%) and blepharoconjunctivitis in 5 (14.3%) of the cases. Conclusion: The incidence of ocular pathologies in patients with Down syndrome is higher than that in normal population. Close follow-up in this patient group is important for the provision of vision rehabilitation and early diagnosis and treatment of cataract, strabismus and refractive errors.

Özet

Amaç: Down sendromlu olgularda oküler patolojileri tespit etmek. Onbir (%31,4) olguda miyopi, 23 (%65,7) olguda hipermetropi, 26 (%74,3) olguda astigmatizma, 20 (%57,1) olguda ezotropya, 4 (%11,4)olguda ekzotropya, 3 (%8,5) olguda vertikal şaşılık, 5 (%14,3) olguda vertikal şaşılık ile birlikte ezotropya, 5 (%14,3) olguda nistagmus, 2 (%5,7) olguda katarakt, 1 (%2,8) olguda keratokonus, 1 (%2,8) olguda glokom, 4 (%11,4) olguda nazolakrimal kanal tıkanıklığı, 5 (%14,3) olguda blefarokonjunktivit tespit ettik.
