Abstract

Objective: To assess whether the non-Sjogren dry eye patients' serum vitamin D levels differ from control group. Material and Method: Forty patients who were diagnosed as non-Sjögren dry eye disease by means of Schirmer test, fluorescein break-up time and ophthalmic examination were compared with a control group of 40 patients who were admitted with non-complicated refractory complaints. None of the study participants had a history of systemic inflammatory disease, ocular surgery, contact lens usage and drug consumption. The serum 25-OH-vitamin D level was measured by the Chemiluminescence Enzyme Immuno Assay. Results: Mean age of the participants and gender distribution was 58±7.5 (35-77) years and male/female:14/66. Both groups were similar regarding the gender distribution and mean ages. Both groups had subnormal mean serum vitamin D values <20 ng/mL. Mean serum vitamin D levels of patient and control groups were 12.3±6.8 (5-27.9) vs 11.7±5.0 (4,4-21,8) ng/mL and there was no statistically significant difference (Mann-Whitney U test, p= 0.988). Conclusion: In patients with non-Sjogren dry eye disease, serum vitamin D levels were similar to control group. This lack of difference may be due to the general low serum vitamin D levels in the population.
