Abstract

PURPOSE: The investigation of the incidence of chlamydial ocular infection in patients with acute follicular Conjunctivitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Conjunctival specimens from 35 patients with follicular Conjunctivitis were tested for the presence of intrastoplasmic inclusion bodies of C. trachomatis by using Giemsa staining and for the presence of C. trachomatis antigens by using enzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Intrastoplasmic inclusion bodies of C. trachomatis were positive by Giemsa staining in 10 patients. C. trachomatis antigens were positive by ELISA in 6 patients. Antichlamydial treatment were administered in patients with positive chlamydial antigens. CONCLUSION: The laboratory tests were necessary for the diagnosis of inclusion Conjunctivitis. The presence of chlamydial antigens by ELISA is a reliable method.
