Abstract

Purpose: It has been shown that there is a possible association between Mooren ulcer and hepatitis C virus (HCV). In the present study we investigated relationship between HCV infection and peripheral corneal disorders such as marginal keratitis and Terrien's marginal degeneration. Material and Methods: Hepatitis C antibodies were examined in 13 patients (6 male,7 female) who have peripheral corneal disorders such as marginal keratitis and Terrien's marginal degeneration and 30 patients (10 male, 20 female) who were positive for HCV, were also evaluated for peripheral corneal disorders. Results: Five of 13 patients with peripheral corneal disorders had Terrien's marginal degeneration, 7 patients had marginal keratitis and 1 patient had Rosacea keratitis. The average age was 38.5±16.2. Those 13 patients were seronegative for HCV. We also examined 30 patients who have chronic HCV disease (average age was 40.8±14.1) for peripheral corneal disorder. They were examined with slitlamp biomicroscopy and there were no peripheral corneal disorders. Six of 30 patients had pterygium and 1 patient had pinguecula. Conclusion: We studied the etiological role of HCV in the patients with marginal keratitis and Terrien's marginal degeneration and we also assesed peripheral corneal disorder in the patients with HCV infection. We did not find a relationship between HCV infection and marginal keratitis or Terrien's marginal degeneration.
