Abstract

Purpose: Pseudoexfoliation, which affects anterior segment structures, is thought to be a systemic disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between pseudoexfoliation and sensorineural hearing loss. Material and Methods: The study group included 51 patients with exfoliation and 22 controls. The patients and normal controls underwent a complete ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngologic examination. Hearing level was evaluated with audiotimpanogram battery in all cases. The pure tone audiogram hearing levels were classified into 6 groups. Results: The mean age of all patients was 67.4 years. All patients had exfoliation in at least one eye. Seventeen eyes had no evidence of exfoliation or glaucoma, 14 eyes had exfoliation but no glaucoma and 71 eyes had both exfoliation and glaucoma. Thirty four patients had bilateral exfoliation while 17 patients had unilateral exfoliation. One-hundred and two ears of the 51 patient at study group and 44 ears of 22 control patients were evaluated with pure tone audiogram after otologic examination. In the 102 ears of the pseudoexfoliation patients, 34 ears (33.3%) had normal hearing level, 68 (66.7%) ears had hearing loss at various degrees. The mean age of the control group was 61. In this group, 27 of the 44 ears (61.4%) were normal, 17 (38.6%) ears had hearing loss at various degrees. There was statistically significant difference between control and patient groups (p<0.01) in terms of of hearing loss. Conclusion: The patients with pseudoexfoliation have more sensorineural hearing loss in comparison to age matched control group.
