Abstract

Aim: To assess the functional surgical success and complications of endonasal endoscopyguided modified conjunctivodacryocystorhinostomi (CDCR) and Jones tube placement without skin incision or dacryocystorhinostomy, in lacrimal drainage obstructions. Material and Method: We assessed retrospectively the charts of patients who had undergone endonasal endoscopy-guided transcaruncular modified CDCR and Jones tube placement using a MVR knife, between June 2006- December 2007, in our oculoplastic division. Patients’ characteristics, pre- and post-operative data of local examination were reviewed. Results: Eleven eyes of 10 patients who had a follow-up period of minimum six months were included in the study. The mean age was 31.9 ± 11.5 years. The mean follow-up period was 10.0 ± 3.9 months. The causes of lacrimal obstruction were traumatic canalicular injury (five eyes), previous failed lacrimal surgeries (four eyes), and congenital canalicular agenesis (two eyes). A satisfactory result was obtained in 7 of 11 eyes (64%), without any complication. Secondary surgeries were performed in four eyes due to conjunctival growth-obstruction, tube malposition and extrusion. Operating time was 30 minutes or less in all cases (mean±SD: 22.7 ± 6.1 minutes). Conclusion: Endonasal endoscopy-guided transcaruncular modified CDCR with the insertion of a Jones tube appears to be a safe, simple and satisfactory surgical method in terms of functional success and operation time.
