Abstract

Purpose: To compare the results of cataract surgery in trabeculectomised eyes with extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and phacoemulsification. Material and Methods: Retrospective results of 26 trabeculectomised eyes of 22 patients who underwent ECCE and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with corneal incision and prospective results of 19 trabeculectomised eyes of 18 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, 1st Eye Clinic were compared in terms of postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) course, keratometric changes, visual acuity and complications, as well as surgical success of trabeculectomy and conjunctival blebs. Results: Preoperative IOP levels were not different between groups, while postoperative 3rd month and 6th month IOPs were significantly higher in the ECCE group. ECCE was found to increase the number of glaucoma medications, to reduce the success of trabeculectomy, and to destroy the functional appearance of conjunctival blebs. No significant difference was found between groups in terms of complications and final corrected visual acuity, while surgically induced astigmatism was higher in the ECCE group. Conclusion: Phacoemulsification was found to be more advantageous in trabeculectomised eyes with regard to IOP control, visual outcome, and maintenance of the function of trabeculectomy.
