Abstract

Purpose: This study was designed to investigate whether trypan blue has a toxic effect on retinal tissue in vitrectomized rabbit eyes. Materials and Methods: Eighteen New Zealand White rabbits were separated into three groups (six rabbits in each group). After vitrectomy and posterior hyaloid peeling, 0.1 ml of 0.06% TB, 0.2% TB and balanced salt solution (BSS) was injected slowly just over the optic disk. Dye was aspirated actively three minutes later. Clinical, light microscopic and electroretinographic examinations were performed to evaluate retinal toxic effect before and sixth week after the surgery. Results: No clinical and light microscopic abnormalities were found in any group. No statistically significant reductions in scotopic "a" wave or "b" wave amplitudes were found in any of the animals at the end of the sixth week. Conclusions: These findings support that short-term presence of 0.1 ml 0.06% or 0.2% trypan blue in vitrectomised rabbit eyes is not toxic on retinal tissue.
