Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of amniolic membrane transplantation (AMT) in the reconstruction of large conjunctival defects after excision of conjunctival tumors. Materials and Methods: Sine eyes of nine patients with conjunctival tumors were assessed in this prospective study. There were benign tumors in 3 eyes (33.3%) (pyogenic granulomas in 2 eyes: lymphoid hvperplasia in 1 eye), and malignant tumors in 6 eyes (66.7%) (conjunctival squamous cell carcinomas in 4 eyes; conjunctival malignant melanoma in I eye; and granulocylic sarcoma in 1 eye). Amniotic membrane transplantation for reconstruction of the conjunctiva was performedfollowing total excision of the tumors. After excision of the suspected malignant conjunctival tumor, cryotherapy was applied to the margins of the remaining conjunctiva. Results: During a mean follow-up of 6.9 months (range. 4-13 months), recurrence was observed in only one eye (11.1%) (granulocylic sarcoma). External beam radiotherapy was applied to that eye. Ocular surface healing was rapid and complete in all cases. No complications was observed after AMT. Conclusion: Amniolic membrane transplantation is an effective and reliable in the reconstruction of ocular surface after excision of large conjunctival tumors.
