Abstract

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is a disease occurring as a result of diminished blood supply to the optic nerve. Clinically it is characterized with sudden painless loss of vision. Systemic causes like shock and hypotension as well as local atherosclerosis can decrease blood flow in the posterior ciliary artery supplying optic nerve. Hypotension due to hemodialysis is a frequent, unpredictable complication of hemodialysis. Hypotension can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve leading to anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Fundoscopic findings, visual field defects, hyperflourescence of fundus with florescein angiography are important for diagnosis. Two anterior optic neuropathy cases are presented to discuss hypotension due to hemodialysis as a possible cause of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.
