Abstract

Aim: To investigate the demographic features and risk factors in seriously injured hospitalised ocular trauma cases. Material and Method: Records of the 244 ocular trauma cases who were examined in emergency service and hospitalised in our clinic between May 2002 and January 2007 evaluated retrospectively. Descriptive statistics of demographic features of cases (gender, age, occupation and habitation) and injury details ( places where the injury took place, mechanisims of injury, objects which were responsible from injury) investigated. Moreover distributions of injury details in demographic feature groups were also analysed. Results: One hundred and ninenty two (78.7%) of our cases were men and 52 (21.3%) of them were women. Mean age was 35.28±21.71 (2-83). Cases were diagnosed as penetrating (118 cases -48.3%), blunt (116 cases 47.5%), chemical (5 cases-2.1%) and thermal (2 cases- 0.8%) ocular trauma. Besides these, 1 case (0.4%) had eyelid laceration, 1 case (0.4%) had deep intracorneal foreing body and 1 case (0.4%) had corneal perforation secondary to traumatic cornael abscess. The most affected occupational group was labors (79 cases-32.4%); the most frequent place which was subjected to trauma was house (93 cases-38.1%) and the most frequent object causing trauma were woods and sticks (84 cases- 34.4%). In addition, most common place exposed to ocular trauma was work place for men (77 cases-37.5%); and house for women (32 cases-61.5%), children (31 cases-64.6%) and elderly (38 cases-60.3%) cases. Conclusion: It is very important to determine the risk factors for being able to prevent ocular trauma. By the help of information from the investigations, measures taken against accidents could be successful in preventing blindness.
