Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the incidence of the development of cystoid macular edema(CME) and related risk factors in aphakic or pseudophakic glaucomatous eyes using latanoprost. Materials and Methods: Fifthy aphakic or pseudophakic glaucomatous 50 eyes of 39 patients using latanoprost %0.005 are included in the study (48 were pseudophakic, 2 were aphakic). Mean follow-up was 12.4±7.1 months. Patients who had one line loss in Snellen chart were evaluated with optic coherence tomography and/or fluorescein angiography for the diagnosis of clinically significant CME Results: Visual loss was detected in 7 eyes of 6 patients during follow-up. The causes of visual loss were epiretinal membrane in 2 eyes and diabetic macular edema in 2 eyes. In the remaining 3 eyes of 3 patients typical CME was detected. In 2 of these 3 eyes posterior capsule was not intact with anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) in 1 eye, and aphakia in the other. The third eye had posterior chamber IOL with intact posterior capsule. Conclusion: CME causing visual loss may develop during latanoprost therapy in aphakic or pseudophakic glaucomatous eyes. Latanoprost should be used cautiously especially in aphakic and pseudophakic eyes with anterior chamber IOL.
