Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate microbiolojical changes in ocular surface flora due to the closer relation between the skin and ocular surface in dermatochalasis. Material and methods: 39 eyes of 24 patients with dermatochalasis (group I) and 31 eyes of 20 patients as the control group were included in the study between December 2002-May 2003. Patients with dermatochalasis were divided into 3 groups according to the degree of sagging of the skin. Following routime ophthalmic examination conjonctival cultures were taken and impression cytologycal evaluation of the presence of inflamotory cells were performed. Results: 27 eyes (%69) in group I and 11 eyes (%35) in group-II had blepharitis . This was statistically significant (p=0.005). Statistically significant, positive culture were obtained in 26 eyes (%66) in group-I and 12 eyes (%38) group II. In both groups staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently cultured microorganism. Conclusion: It was suggested that the closer relation between skin and ocular surface in dermatochalasis may induce bacterial contamination and blepharitis.
