Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of capsular tension ring on posterior capsular opasification. Material and Method: Sixty-two eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome which were applied cataract surgery by phacoemulsification were included in the study. Capsular tension ring was implanted in 30 of the eyes. Remaining 32 eyes were taken into the control group. Polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted to all eyes. Patients were followed-up between 12 to 15 months (average:13.2 months). Evaluated parameters were the development of posterior capsular opasification, Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates and the time interval between posterior capsular opasification and cataract surgery. Chi-square and paired samples tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: Posterior capsular opasification developed in 4 of the 30 eyes which were implanted capsular tension ring while in 10 of 32 eyes in the control group. Nd:YAG capsulotomy were applied to these eyes. The difference in the posterior capsular opasification rates between the two groups was found statistically significant (p<0.05). The time interval between posterior capsular opasification and cataract surgery was between 7 to 9 months (average:8.1 months) in the study group while it was between 4 to 7 months (average:5.2 months) in the control group. The difference in the time interval between the posterior capsular opasification and cataract surgery between the two groups was found statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: Posterior capsular opasification after cataract surgery is less commonly seen in eyes in which capsular tension ring was implanted. The time interval between posterior capsular opasification and cataract surgery is also longer in these eyes.
