Abstract

Aim: Macular evaluation of patients whose bio-microscopic fundus examination could not be made adequately due to Asteroid Hyalosis (AH) with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Material and Method: The Study has been carried out on 9 eyes of 8 patients whose maculas could not be adequately evaluated with bio-microscope because of AH. Along with full ophthalmologic examinations of patients, their color fundus photographs and OCTs have been evaluated. Of the patients at the age of 50-67, three were female and five were male. Type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension were present in three patients and only hypertension was found in one patient. Results: It was impossible to evaluate macula during fundus examination with 78 D noncontact lens after papillary dilation because of asteroid hyalosis. It was possible to make the diagnosis with OCT in these cases. OCT provided definitive anatomic diagnoses that included macular idiopathic epiretinal membrane, macular hole, traction retinal detachment, macular edema, and drusen. It has been found that OCT Signal Power (4-7) was the same in both eyes. Mean foveal thickness measured by taking fixation point of all patients as central point was 237±61,15 (172-346) μ. Cystoid macula edema was found in a patient suffering Type 2 diabetes mellitus and diffuse macular edema was found in 2 patients. One patient was diagnosed as idiopathic epiretinal membrane as well. Macular abnormality was not detected in the remaining patients. Conclusion: OCT is a valuable imaging technique with high resolution, easy applicability and good patient compliance . OCT can be critical to diagnose macular conditions when retinal visualization is limited by asteroid hyalosis.
