Abstract

Aim: We aim to compare the results of posterior capsular opacification rates between uveitic cataract and senile cataract cases. Material and Method: Sixty seven eyes of 53 patients with uveitic cataracts and 69 eyes of 69 patients with senile cataract who operated in İstanbul Education and Research Hospital were included to this study. Average follow up time was 24 ±3.1 month. Acyrilic intraocular lens (IOL) were implanted to all patients except two uveitic cataract cases in whom posterior capsular tear occurred during surgery. Results: Posterior capsular opacification rate was 43.4% in first year and 57.3% in second year in uveitic cataract cases, this rate was 7.9% in first year and 8.5% in second year in senile cataract group. Conclusion: The result of cataract surgery depend on the type and degree of uveitis, careful preoperative and postoperative examination and surgical technique. With careful patient selection, appropriate pre and postoperative supervision phacoemulsification is safe and effective in uveitic cataract cases. With the development of IOL material and design, cataract surgery will be more effective in uveitis patients.
