Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the association of normal macular thickness with age and sex and its interocular difference with Spectral-Domain optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Material end Method: 212 eyes of 106 subjects with best corrected visual acuity 9/10 and above were included. The subjects underwent detailed ocular examination and anayzed with SD-OCT. Thickness values from central subfield representing foveal area and from inner and outer regions constituting from nasal, superior, temporal and inferior fields were evaluated with respect to age and sex and compared interocularly. Results: Mean macular thicknesses were as follows: central subfield 261.7±21.2 (196-305) μm, nasal inner field 339.8±17.1 μm, nasal outer field 314.6±16.5 μm, superior inner field 341.0±17.6 μm, superior outer field 296.6±15.5 μm, temporal inner field 325.8±16.2 μm, temporal outer field 284.8±15.9 μm, inferior inner field 335.3±19.1 μm ve inferior outer field 288.0±14.5. Macular thicknesses were not correlated with age and did not show interocular difference (p>0.05 for all the values). Male subjects had thicker macula than female subjects in central subfield and inferior inner region (p=0.012 ve p=0.015, respectively). Conclusion: The data in this study and value of upper limit of 305 μm in central subfield can be used in interpretation of SD-OCT images and measures.
