Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the patient comfort and cooperation during phacoemulsification cataract surgery under topical anesthesia. Material and Method: This study was performed on 140 patients who had uncomplicated phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation surgery between Septem ber 2010 and February 2011. Evaluation of the patient’s pain level was measured by the visual analogue pain scale (VAPS) and evaluation of the patient’s cooperation level was scored by surgeon. Results: The mean VAPS scores of the female and male patients were 1.14±1.51 and 1.11±1.69, respectively. The mean VAPS scores of the right and left eyes were 1.25±1.61 ve 1.01±1.58, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between these parameters. However, there was a strong positive correlation between VAPS score and cooperation of patients. Conclusion: TA provides satisfactory anesthesia irrespective of gender of patients and laterality of the operated eye, during phacoemulsification cataract surgery for the comfort and cooperation of patients.
