Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study is to report results of surgically treated periorbital dermoid with esthetic incisions in children. Material and Method: Records of 9 children operated in our clinic during 2003- 2011 with inital diagnosis of dermoid cysts were reviewed. Results: Mean age of children was 4.7±5.2 years (range 4 months- 18 years). Surgery was perfomed at 6 years in all children except one. Lesions were periorbital in all children; 7 located superotemporal and 2 superonasally. Surgery was performed using a below brow incision in 4, upper eyelid crease incision in 4 and above brow in 1 patient. Histopathologic examination revealed dermoid cysts in all cases. Mean anatomic diameter was 11 mm (3mm-12 mm). Cyst wall was ruptured during surgery in one patient. All of cysts’ contents and the capsule was removed and orbital contents was irrigated with copious saline solution in this patient. No recurrences, lid dysfunction or esthetic problems were observed during a mean follow up of 3 years. Conclusion: Total excision using appropriate facial incisions may prevent recurrence and has promising esthetic results.
