Abstract

Aim: To compare the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and central macular thickness (CMT) of amblyopic and presumed normal eyes with optic coherence tomography (OCT) in amblyopic subjects. Material and Method: In this prostective study, 50 eyes of 25 patients who were diagnosed as amblyopia for the first time between March and May 2010 at Ankara University Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Deparment were included. A detailed ophthalmologic examination, keratometry, axial length measurement and RNFL, CMT measurements with OCT (Cirrus-Carl Zeiss) were performed in all subjects. The peripapillary RNFL, SMT and axial length measurements were compared between the amblyopic and fellow eyes. Results: The average age of the patients was 14.5 years (7-30). Lateralization in 11 amblyopic eyes were right and 14 eyes were left. According to the etiology; 68% of the cases had anisometropia, 20% had strabismus and12% had deprivation due to ptosis and congenital cataract. The peripapillary RNFL thickness in amblyopic eyes were (respectively inferior, superior, nasal, temporal quadrants) 122.3±20.4μm, 116.3±18.8 μm, 65.9±14.2 μm, 68.3±23.8 μm, in the fellow eye 124.0±19.2 μm, 117.9±16.8 μm, 69.9±15.6 μm, 65.6±13.1 μm. The mean CMT of the amblyopic and fellow normal eyes was 249.2±30.8 μm and 258.5 ±37.6 μm. The mean axial length was 22.0±1.5 mm in amblyopic eyes and 22.6±1.0 mm in fellow eyes. Regarding the peripapillary RNFL, CMT and axial length measurements, there were no statistically significant difference between the amblyopic and the fellow eyes. Conclusion: In this study between different types of amblyopia no significant difference was found between amblyopic and normal fellow eyes regarding the peripapillary RNFL, CMT and axial length measurements. Therefore it can be concluded that amblyopia does not have an effect on the thickness of the fovea and peripapillary nerve fiber layer and low visual acuity of the amblyopic eyes can not be explained by the anatomical changes of the nerve fiber layer.
