Abstract

Aim: To demonstrate the characteristics of patients with mature cataract and their surgical results of phacoemulsification and compare between our surgical results and literature. Material and Method: Eighty seven eyes of 87 patients with mature cataract who underwent phacoemulsification enrolled to study. Age, gender, fellow eye examination findings were recorded for all cases. Surgical complications and surgical results identified and results compared with literature. Results: The characteristics of the patients; mean age was 71.97±8.3, 50 women and 37 men, the fellow eye visual activity was mean 0.33±0.24. Fellow eye findings; 27 (31%) phakic, 37 (42.5%) cataract, 23 (26.5%) pseudophakic. Surgical findings; failed capsulorexis was found in 5 (5.7%) cases, posterior capsule perforation in 3 (3.4%) cases, conversion to extracapsular extraction in 1 (1.1%) case. Intraocular lens was implanted into anterior chamber in one patient, on the sulcus in two patients and into the capsular bag in all of the others. It was detected no or minimal corneal edema in 81 (93%) cases that regressed in a week after surgery. Corneal edema resolved within two weeks in 5 (5.7%) cases and, achieved complete recovery in 1 (1.3%) case within a month. Persistent corneal edema and endophthalmitis was not observed. Conclusion: Mature cataract patients had high average age, women dominant and the most common finding in the fellow eyes was cataract. Although mature cataract in phacoemulsification technique creates the high risk group, this technique is still the best one.
