Abstract

Aim: To evaluate visual field findings that occured secondary to dermatochalasis and to investigate the changes of these findings after blepharoplasty in dermatochalasis patients. Material and Method: Sixty eyes of 30 patients operated for upper eyelid dermatochalasis between January 2009 and June 2011 were evaluated in this study. Vertical fissure height and upper margin reflex distance (MRD) measurements and visual field testing using a computerized static perimeter were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at month three. Patients were divided into two groups according to preoperative MRD: MRD<2.5 mm (Group 1) and MRD≥2.5 mm (Group 2). Results: The mean age was 56.5±9.2 years (min-max: 36-72). The groups were similar regarding the age and gender (p>0.05). Preoperatively, 38 (79.2%) eyes had superior visual field defects. Superior visual field defects improved significantly in both groups (p=0.016 for Group 1; p=0.006 for Group 2). Conclusions: Perimetry is important in the assessment of surgical effectiveness of the blepharoplasty as an objective indicator of the degree of visual field defects produced by the dermatochalasis and the improvement of the defect after blepharoplasty. Taping the upper lid can not produce constant fissure height leading to variable visual field results. Thus in order to not relate the defect to glaucoma, blepharoplasty must be suggested to glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients.
