Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) on orbital hemodynamic parameters using color doppler ultrasonography (CDU). Material and Method: Twenty seven eyes of 27 patients with subfoveal choroidal neovascular (CNV) membrane due to AMD are included in the study. CDU examinations were done prior to PDT and repeated after 1 week, 3 weeks and 3 months. Peak systolic (PSV) and end diastolic velocities (EDV) of the ophthalmic, central retinal (CRA) and short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCA) were measured and resistivity index (RI) was calculated. Results: None of the hemodynamic parameters changed significantly after the first PDT (p>0.025). Seventeen eyes that received second PDT, RI of CRA and SPCA significantly decreased at third week (p<0.025). Conclusion: PDT applied due to exudative AMD causes some changes at the orbital hemodynamic parameters which can be determined with CDU. These changes may be due to recanalization of CNV and choroidal vessels causing an improved ocular perfusion after 3 weeks of PDT. Those changes likely occuring as a result of a cumulative effect following the second dose of treatment were not permanently observed following the third month of treatment.
