Conclusions: Although no statistically significant difference was determined between the results of symmetric and asymmetric medial rectus recession to correct esotropia, it can be said that in asymmetric homonym medial rectus recession, the success rate is higher and the correction may longer lasting.

Abstract

Aim: To compare the anatomic results of esotropic cases undergoing an asymmetric medial rectus recession with symmetric medial rectus recession. Material and Method: The study comprised 106 cases diagnosed with esotropia who underwent surgery between January 2009 and January 2011. The cases were allocated to either the symmetric or asymmetric medial rectus recession group according to the surgical technique used. For both groups, deviation measurements were evaluated at postoperative third day, third week and third month follow-ups. The groups were compared in respect of surgical success rates. Results: The mean age of the cases was 6.01 ± 3.86 years (1 - 17 yrs). On examination of the findings from postoperative third day, third week and third month the asymmetric recession group had a higher success rate compared to the symmetric recession group but this difference between the groups was not statistically significant. A comparison between the two groups of the number of cases who required a second operation to achieve full correction determined no significant difference between the groups. Conclusions: Although no statistically significant difference was determined between the results of symmetric and asymmetric medial rectus recession to correct esotropia, it can be said that in asymmetric homonym medial rectus recession, the success rate is higher and the correction may longer lasting.
