Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements by ultrasonic pachymeter, non-contact specular microscope and non-contact pneumotonometer combined with an optical pachymeter. Material and Method: Right eyes of 21 (43.8%) male and 27 (56.3%) female healthy sub- jects aged between 21-32 years (mean 24.54±2.71) were included in this cross-sectional study. In the first session of CCT measurements the first operator took two consecutive measurements by ultrasonic pachymeter, non-contact specular microscope and non-contact pneumotonome- ter combined with an optical pachymeter. In the second session of CCT measurements the first operator took one more measurement and second operator took a further measurement using the same pachymeters. All CCT measurements were performed under topical anesthesia in the morning with random sequence but the ultrasound measurement was taken last. The CCT measurements were evaluated using one way analysis of variance, intraclass correlation coef- ficient, Bland-Altman plot, coefficient of repeatability and coefficient of reproducibility. Results: The mean CCT measurements using ultrasonic pachymeter, specular microscope and tonometer combined with pachymeter were 549.84±31.46, 549.35±38.86 and 539.71±27.81 μm, respectively. The coefficient of repeatability and coefficient of reproducibil- ity for measurements of ultrasonographic pachymeter, specular microscope, tonometer com- bined with pachymeter were 2.72%, 6.49%, 4.55% and 3.46%, 5.80%, 3.55%, respectively. In the Bland-Altman plot the 95% limits of agreement was approximately 43 μm for ultrasono- graphic pachymeter and specular microscope measurements and approximately 41 μm for ul- trasonographic pachymeter and tonometer combined with pachymeter measurements. Conclusion: Measurement of CCT with ultrasonographic pachymeter yielded better re- peatability and reproducibility than specular microscopy and tonometer combined with pachymeter. In clinical practice, the measurement acquired by these optical pachymeters are not interchangeable with ultrasonographic pachymeter measurements.
