Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) measured by ultrasonographic pachymetry (UP) and central macular thickness (CMT), macular volume (MV), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) obtained by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) in unilaterally amblyopic young adults. Material and Method: Seventy eyes of 35 unilaterally amblyopic young adult patients were enrolled into the study. An amblyopic eye was defined as an eye that has a visual acuity of at least two lines worse than the normal eye using the Snellen chart. All eyes underwent detailed ophthalmologic examination and central corneal thickness (CCT) measurement using UP, as well as central macular thickness (CMT), macular volume (MV), and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) measurements obtained by OCT were noted. Results of the amblyopic and fellow normal eyes were compared statistically. Results: Mean age of 17 female and 18 male patients, was 27.9±7.4 (18-35) years. Twenty-nine eyes (%82.8) had anisometropic and 6 eyes (%17.2) had strabismic amblyopia. All strabismic amblyopia eyes had esotropia. Mean CCT was 553.6±21.7 (498-590) µ in normal eyes and 554.3±21.3 (495-588) µ in amblyopic eyes. Mean CMT was 247.3±18.7 (214-288) µ in normal eyes and 247.8±18.2 (215-290) µ in amblyopic eyes. Mean MV was 10.3±0.4 (9.6-11.4) mm3 in normal eyes and 10.2±0.4 (9.5-11.5) mm3 in amblyopic eyes. Mean RNFLT was 97.7±8.4 (84- 121) µ in normal eyes and 97.7±8.4 (84-121) µ in amblyopic eyes. There was no statistically significant difference between CCT, CMT, MV, and RNFLT of the amblyopic and fellow eyes. Conclusions: There was no statistically significant difference between CCT, CMT, MV, and RNFLT of the amblyopic and fellow eyes of unilaterally amblyopic young adult patients
