Abstract

Aim: To determine the quality of life, and to study its relationship with clinical determinants of glaucoma in patients with various degrees of visual field loss. Material and Method: Forty primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients with various degrees of visual field loss and 29 control subjects who presented to the outpatient clinic performed Humphrey 24-2 SITA standard visual field test. Patients were divided into mild, moderate and severe visual field loss groups according to Hodapp-Parish-Anderson classification using monocular visual field “best-eye model’’. In addition, binocular visual fields were obtained by using “best location model’’ and sensitivities were calculated for total field, superior, inferior hemifields and central 16 points. Quality of life analysis was performed with ‘The Glaucoma Quality of Life Questionnaire’ (GQL-15) survey. Morover, the “central and near vision F1’’,‘’peripheral vision F2’’,“dark adaptation and glare F3’’,“outdoor mobility F4’’ subgroups of the survey were evaluated. Results: The average score of GQL-15 was 93.11±4.84 in the control group and 64.25± 16.92 in the glaucoma group (p=0.001). The highest score of quality of life (71.88±18.93) in glaucoma group was obtained in‘’outdoor mobility’’ subgroup. The lowest mean (61.83±20.97) was observed in “peripheral vision” subgroup. In the control group the highest mean score of quality of life analysis (95.68±4.65) was found in “peripheral vision” whereas the lowest mean score (91.02±7.47) was observed in “dark adaptation and glare” subgroup. Among the GQL-15 scores calculated according to Hodapp-Parish-Anderson classification, the worst mean was obtained (38.98±9.62) in “severe visual field loss” group. A statistically significant correlation was found between GQL-15 total score and subgroups with best eye MD and PSD values. Conclusion: The level of visual field loss and the amount of impairment in quality of life in glaucoma patients show significant correlation. Assessment of quality of life may enable us to guide our patients in their daily lives and thereby to reduce adverse social effects associated with glaucoma. To achieve this goal the GQL-15 survey appears to be an easily applicable, quick and effective test.
