Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the effect of functional success existing pigment epithelial detachment in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with ranibizumab. Material and Method: Forty eyes of 38 AMD patients were included. Patients were treated with 3 doses of intravitreal ranibizumab injection according to PRONTO study. Before and after the treatment, all patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination, including bestcorrected visual acuity (BCVA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. Patients were divided into 2 groups. Twenty-two eyes with PED and retinal fluid secondary to choroid neovascularization (CNV) were included in Group 1, 18 eyes with retinal fluid secondary to CNV included in Group 2. Results: The mean age of 38 patients were 73,1±8 years (55-85). At the presentation, there was no statistically significant difference in visual acuity, central macular thickness (CMT) and thickest value of macula between two groups. (p>0.05) The mean follow-up time after 3 doses of anti-VEGF treatment was 24.44±9.94 months (12-48 months). The mean number of intravitreal ranibizumab injections was 9.6 in Group 1 and 8.1 in Group 2. After the treatment, there was a statistically significant decrease in CMT and thickest value of macula in both groups. Although there was no statistically significant difference at the baseline and final BCVA in Group 1, final BCVA improved significantly in Group 2. Conclusion: Treatment of pigment epithelial detachment with ranibizumab have low efficiency in visual acuity improvement.
