Abstract

In this study we aimed to determine if serum levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1, matrix metalloproteinase-9, connective tissue growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor differred between patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome. Material and Method: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome group 50 eyes, control group 48 eyes were included in the study. Blood specimens (5 mL) were collected from the forearm. Serum specimens obtained after centrifugation of blood samples were stored in deep freezer until analysis. Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1, matrix metalloproteinase-9, connective tissue growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor levels were determined in serum samples using specific enzyme immunoassays. Results: The mean serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in the pseudoexfoliation syndrome group was lower than in the control group, p value was 0.112 (p>0.05). The mean serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor in the pseudoexfoliation syndrome group was lower than in the control group, p value was 0.306 (p>0.05). The mean tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and connective tissue growth factor levels in serum samples were higher than in the pseudoexfoliation syndrome group, and p value were respectively 0.491 and 0.283(p>0.05). Conclusion: Matrix metalloproteinase-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and connective tissue growth factor levels differ in pseudoexfoliation syndrome patients from patients without pseudoexfoliation syndrome in serum. This suppports that extracellular homeostasis is disturbed resulting in accumulation of extracellular matrix. It might be foreseen that development of preventive treatments in the future by regulation of interactions between matrix metalloproteinase-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and connective tissue growth factor will inhibit or slow down the progression of pseudoexfoliation syndrome.
