Abstract

Objective: To analyze the association between retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and signal strength measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography. Material and Method: One hundred and nine eyes with glaucoma were included in this retrospective study. Retinal nerve fiber layer thick- ness was measured by Stratus optical coherence tomography. The first retinal nerve fiber layer measurements were repeated three times after pupil dilatation by 1% tropicamide in cases because of their low signal strengths and the measurement with the highest signal strength was ac- cepted as the second measurement. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness variations and signal strengths in the first and second measurements were compared by applying the correlation analyses. Results: The average signal strength in the first measurements was 3.58 and in the second measurements was 4.98. The average retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was 56.17±21.12 micron in the first measurements and 63.03±20.99 micron in the second measurements. It was detected that average 1 unit signal strength raise in Stratus optical coherence tomography is related to average 4.9 micron retinal nerve fiber layer thick- ness raise (p=0.016). Conclusion: The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements in optical coherence tomography can change meaningful with alteration of signal strength. When the signal strength is low, the retinal nerve fiber layer appears is less reflective in optical coherence tomography and the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness becomes thinner. Therefore, the highest signal strength should be tried to obtain in optical coherence to- mography for more accurate and qualified retinal nerve fiber layer measurements.
