Abstract

Objective: To evaluate serum YKL-40 levels in patients with age related macular degeneration. Material and Method: This study included 72 age related macular degeneration patients (32 dry and 40 wet type) and 42 control subjects. The serum levels of YKL-40 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Results: There was no significant difference between two groups with respect to age, gender and body mass index (p>0.05). Mean serum YKL-40 level was 10.94±3.19 ng/mL in age related macular degeneration group and 11.20±4.35 ng/mL in control group (p=0.716). There was- n’t any significant difference between age related macular degeneration sub-groups for serum YKL-40 levels (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Serum YKL-40 levels between age related macular degeneration and control groups was not significantly different. However, we think that further studies evaluating the aqueous humor and vitreous concentrations of YKL-40, which has an important place in inflam- mation and angiogenesis, are needed to clarify the role of YKL-40 in age related macular degeneration pathogenesis
