Abstract

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the choroidal thickness in eyes with astigmatic refractive error and to compare them with those of healthy eyes without any refractive error. Material and Methods: Fifty eyes of 50 subjects with a spherical refractive error of ± 0.50 diopters and a cylindrical refractive error of < -1.50 diopters (Group 1) and 50 eyes of 50 subjects with a spherical refractive error of ± 0.50 diopters and without cylindrical refractive error (Group 2) were examined prospectively. Choroidal thickness was measured with enhanced depth imaging mode of spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Choroidal thickness values were noted from 7 different points including the fovea, 1, 2 and 3 mm nasal and temporal to the fovea and compared between groups. Results: The groups were similar in terms of age and gender (p=0.914 and p=0.632 respectively). The average subfoveal choroidal thickness value was higher than Group 1 in Group 2 (p=0.04). The average choroidal thickness value of nasal 1 mm was also higher in Group 1 compared with Group 2 (p=0.03). Although the difference was not significant, the mean values of 1 mm temporal and 2 and 3 mm nasal to the fovea were higher than Group 2 in Group 1 (p=0.51, p=0.34, and p=0.31, respectively). Conclusion: The choroidal region was thicker especially in subfoveal area in subjects with astigmatic refractive errors. This thickening may be related to associated amblyopia of our subjects.
