Abstract

Aim: To identify the effect of hereditary thrombophilia on the development of neovascularızation in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). Material and Method: The medical records of 44 patients followed-up for BRVO between January 2009 and December 2011 were evaluated retrospectively. The presence of factor V Leiden (FVL), prothrombine G20210A (PTG20210A), and methylene tetrahydrofolate reduc- tase’s (MTHFR) gene C667T mutations were tested and antithrombine III (AT III) deficit were tested. The patients were grouped according to the presence of thrombophilia. The gonioscopy, anterior segment and dilated fundus examination initially and at the follow-op period to detect the development of neovascularization at iris, iridocorneal angle, retina and optic disc was evaluated. The difference between groups of development of neovascularization was examined. Results: The groups were similar regarding to the age, gender, laterality and other sys- temic risk factors (p>0.05). Group 1 had hereditary thrombophilia (n=24), and Group 2 had no thrombophilia (n=20). Neovascularization developed in ten eyes (41.6%) in Group 1 and in nine (45%) eyes in Group 2. There was no statistically significant difference between groups according to development of neovascularization (p> 0.05). When the effect of the mutations over neovascularization is analyzed separately, no statistically significant difference was ob- served (p >0.05) . Conclusions: Presence of thrombophilic risk factors in BRVO does not have a significant effect on neovascularization of iris, anterior chamber angle, retina and optic disc.
