Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the factors affecting functional outcomes of the surgical treatment in patients who suffered from idiopathic epireti- nal membrane. Material and Method: The medical records of forty-four eyes of 42 patients who had previous epiretinal membran surgery were rewieved in this retrospective study. The initial best corrected visual acuity, average duration of complaints, central foveal thickness, the formation of the foveal curvature and the status of the photoreceptor inner/outer segment junction were assessed as the factors that may have affected the functional results of the surgery. Results: The study population included 21 males and 21 females patients with a mean age of 66.27 ± 10.49 years. The average duration of complaints was 13.0 ± 16.89 months. There was a statistically significant increase in the comparison of initial best corrected visual acuity (0.35 ± 0.15) and final best corrected visual acuity (0.66 ± 0.24), (p≤0.001), also there was a statistically significant positive correlation between these two data (p≤0.001, r=0.45). A significant negative correlation was detected between the mean duration of complaints and the increase in visual acuity, final best corrected visual acuity (p≤0.001, r=-0.74, p≤0.001, r=-0.81, respectively). There was a significant negative corre- lation between preoperative central foveal thickness and the increase in visual acuity and final best corrected visual acuity (p≤0.001, r=-0.69, p≤0.001, r=-0.77). Postoperative foveal curvature formation was associated with better visual gain, final best corrected visual acuity, shorter duration of complaints and thinner postoperative central foveal thickness. The baseline, final best corrected visual acuity and postoperative vi- sual gain of the cases with inner/outer segment band loss were statistically significantly lower than those of cases with inner/outer segment band continuity (p≤0.003, p≤0.018, p≤0.001). Conclusions: Considering the study results initial visual acuity, duration of complaints, and preoperative central foveal thickness are the prognostic factors affecting postoperative visual acuity. The postoperative formation of foveal curvature and the preoperative status of inner/outer segment band are the other factors that also affect functional outcomes.
