Abstract

Objective: To investigate the avascular areas detected after the completion of vascularization in patients with spontaneously regressed stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity at zone 2 and determine whether they are within acceptable limits. Material and Method: In this retrospective case control study, eyes that still had avascular areas in the temporal retina detected with indirect ophthalmoscopy during the follow-up examination of retinopathy of prematurity were included. Fluorescein angiography was performed under sedation for all patients. The distance between the vascular-avascular junction and the ora serrata was measured at the widest place as the unit of optical disc vertical diameter. Results: Twenty eight eyes of 22 patients (6 female, 16 male) were included in the study. The mean gestational age was 28,29±2,73 weeks and the mean birth weight was 1242±524,1 grams. Nasal retinal vascularization was completed in all eyes. The avascular area measured from the widest point in the temporal region was an average of 2.1±0.38 optic disc diameter. The avascular area was measured as less than 2 disc diameters (mean 1.63±0.17) in 9 eyes, while in 18 eyes the distance was above 2 disc diameter (mean 2.33±0.27). Conclusion: In severe retinopathy of prematurity cases, avascular areas could persist in the eyes that the disease spontaneously regressed without anti-VEGF treatment. These areas could be above normal limits.
