Abstract

Objective: To compare the early efficacy and safety of intravitreal ranibizumab and single dose dexamethasone intravitreal implant therapy in diabetic macular edema. Material and Method: The medical records of 105 diabetic patients diagnosed as diabetic macular edema, between June 2013 and September 2015, at our university department of ophthalmology were examined retrospectively. Group 1 consisted of patients receiving 3 consequent doses of intravitreal ranibizumab once a month, and Group 2 consisted of patients receiving single dose of intravitreal dexamethasone. The diabetic macular edema was confirmed by fundus fluorescein angiography and high definition optical coherence tomography. Best corrected visual acuity, central macular thickness, mean macular thickness, and intraocular pressures were recorded. Results: There were 80 eyes of 70 patients in group 1 and 30 eyes of 25 patients in group 2. While pre-treatment visual acuity were 0.24±0.22 and 0.17±0.16 in group 1 and 2,respectively, they were increased to 0.31±0.24 and 0.28±0.20 at the end of 3 months (p>0,05). Although the central macular thickness and mean macular thickness were decreased in the both groups, there was no significant difference between the groups. Intraocular pressure was increased statistically significant in Group 2 (p=0,013). Conclusion: Intravitreal ranibizumab and intravitreal dexamethasone treatment leads to a similar anatomic and fonctional effect in the treatment of diabetic macular edema in the early period and. While increased number of injection was required in ranibizumab group intravitreal dexamethasone treatment was lead to increase intraocular pressure which can be controlled by topical anti-glaucomatous medication.
