Abstract

Objective: Strabismus surgery in adults aims to provide cosmetic correction and sensory-motor fusion. The aim was to evaluate demographic and clinical features of adulthood strabismus, to investigate effects of surgery on achieving binocular vision and stereopsis. Material and Method: We reviewed the records of 70 patients who underwent strabismus surgery in adulthood. We recorded the direction and comitans of strabismus, preoperative and postoperative binocularity and stereopsis values. We grouped patients according to the age of strabismus onset (5 and 9 years old). We assessed if stereopsis and binocularity changes are related to the comitans and direction of strabismus and age of strabismus onset. Results: Of 70 patients, 77.1% had an onset of strabismus before the age of 9 years. When patients are grouped according to the age of 5 years, 47.1% had an onset before the age of 5 years. We observed an improvement in the postoperative stereopsis levels in 57.1% of patients. When these patients were grouped according to the age of strabismus onset (5 and 9 years), comitans and direction of strabismus, there was no difference between groups in terms of postoperative stereopsis changes. Conclusion: Physicians can consider performing surgery for cosmetic reasons, to eliminate the diplopia and to improve the binocular vision and stereopsis in adult patients. Regardless the onset and duration of deviation, binocular vision can be achieved after surgery in adult patients.
