Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the long-term results of patching treatment in pediatric patients with pediatric glaucoma and determine the factors affecting the treatment. Material and Method: Data were obtained from the records of patients with the diagnosis of pediatric glaucoma in the glaucoma unit of our hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Between 2008-2016, cases referred to our pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus unit were evaluated. The study included 4-7 years of age with intraocular pressure under control and cases with no progression at follow-up. Initial examinations, duration of patching treatment and final visual examinations were recorded. Patients were divided into two groups according to their initial best corrected visual acuity ≥1.00 LogMAR (group 1) and 1.00 LogMAR). Initial and final best corrected visual acuity were compared statistically. Factors af-fecting patching treatment were evaluated statistically in patients with and without visual improvement. Results: Fifty-three eyes of 29 cases were included in the study. The mean follow-up period was 5.45±2.88 years. The mean initial best corrected visual acuity was 0.64±0.64 LogMAR. The final best corrected visual acuity after appropriate patching treatment was 0.50±0.62 LogMAR. When the groups were compared, there was no statistically significant difference in visual acuity in patients included in group 1 (p=0.32). There was a statistically significant difference in Group 2 (p<0.01). Among the prognostic factors, best corrected visual acuity at the initial examination, the number of operations and unilateral glaucoma were found to be poor prognostic factors. Conclusion: As a result, it has been found that patching treatment increases visual acuity in patients with congenital glaucoma in terms of amblyopia prevention. However, high initial visual acuity is an important factor for high outcome visual acuity.
